List of Initiatives: Jamshedpur JoyFest - Joy of Giving Week 2012


A number of events have been planned across the city to celebrate during this week. Following is a list (as of now) of the city-wide (& at XLRI initiatives) – and we are sure that more will get added in the coming days:
·         Donate for Dignity:  Like the past three years, one of the major city-wide initiatives being planned is to invite donations for material resources, and distributing them to the under-served and needy segments of the society through NGOs and civil society organisations. Some specific collection and distribution initiatives are planned with the help of local schools, industries, Rotary, community organizations, NGOs and general public:
o   Vastra-Samman:  A donation drive to collect wearable (clean and complete) clothes, blankets, shawls  items is planned, which will be distributed to the less-privileged through partner NGOs (Contact: Anubhuti Jain, 91-8235674566; Madhukar Shukla, 91-9431113764, sigma [at] xlri.ac.in )
o   Ann-Daan: Similarly, a donation and distribution drive for dry ration (rice, lintels, moodi, and biscuits) continue as one of the city-wide initiative. o   Grameen-Suvidha - Help Making Villages Resource-Rich: A donation and distribution drive to provide simple utility items to remote villages in Jharkhand around Jamshedpur, such as:
·         Combs, nail-cutter, safety pin
·         Thick plastic sheets (4x3 mts) for topping on huts
·         Long handle water ladle (steel)
·         Exercise book, pencil, scale, geometry box
·         water bottle (food grade)
·         Mosquito Nets
·         Steel glass, plate, bowl, spoon
·         Iron, multi vitamin tablets
·         First aid box, Thermometer

Update: Timken Ltd. has committed to contribute 200 mosquito nets towards this cause
o   Donation and Distribution of Un-used but Usable Medicines:  An initiative to collect unused but usable medicines is planned will be rolled out by a city-based NGO, Cause for Change. These will be sorted and distributed to charity clinics and health camps organized by NGOs and civil society bodies. (Contact: Joydip Kr. o   Benefector- Beneficiary Programs - Support Education of  Under-Privileged Children:  Last year funds worth Rs. 85,000/- were raised to support for one year of education for 25 tribal and under-privileged children, studying at the Holy Cross School, Chowka (Chandil), and at St Thomas School, Gande Dungri got financial. Initiated by SIGMA-XLRI, in partnership with Jamshedpur Tribal Foundation (a registered body founded by the Staff of XLRI), this year this initiative will be scaled up to help more children by partnering with other schools. o   Cotton Saree Donation for Lepers’ Colony:  Rotary-West will collect and donate old (washed and clean) cotton sarees to Lepers’ Colonies in Baridih and  Burma Mines, which are then used as bandages. In addition, a number of activities have been planned by the XLRI students committees (SIGMA, CII-Yi, DRACULA, Sportscom, etc.) to celebrate the Jamshedpur JoyFest: Joy of Giving Week. Some of them are:
1.       Nukkad Natak: Like earlier years, the students will perform Nukkad Natak in Clubs, Housing colonies, pandals, to create awareness about the event.
2.       Shadow A CEO (Sept 27th onwards): This event is in partnership with ISB Hyderabad and IIMs – Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta. The students will be bidding to spend one day with 25  selected CEOs during Sept 27th till Oct 2nd on eBay. The Winning Bid amount will be donated to a charity/NGO selected by the CEO. 3.       Jagriti: During this week, XLRI girl students will visit villages nearby Jamshedpur to spread awareness about personal health and hygiene among women. They will counsel them and provide free samples for sanitation for one month to make them aware about the value of hygienic living. (Contact: Debroop Sengupta, 91-9955198045, cii_yi [at] xlri.ac.in )
4.       Disha: During the week CII-Yi students will identify and adopt 12 meritorious Class X students from underprivileged background, and provide them with financial and academic support  for their board exams. (Contact: Debroop Sengupta, 91-9955198045, cii_yi [at] xlri.ac.in )

5.       Inaugural Fund Raising Movie Show – “In Search of Gandhi” (Oct 2nd): The Jamshedpur JoyFest: Joy of Giving Week 2012 will kick off at XLRI with the screening of Lalit Vachani’s BBC4 documentary “In Search of Gandhi”. The funds rising event aims to raise Rs 20,000/- which will be donated to “Missionaries of Charity – Nirmal Hriday” to contribute to roughly one month of their requirements of ration, groceries, soaps, etc. (Contact: Madhukar Shukla, 91-9431113764, sigma [at] xlri.ac.in )
6.        “The Gift of Time” (Oct 3rd): Like earlier years, XLRI students will visit the lodgers of “Missionaries of Charity- Nirmal Hriday” with gifts, and spend a day with them. (Contact: Ish Pahuja, 91-9031909479, sigma [at] xlri.ac.in )
7.       Capacity Building of SHG Members (Oct 4th, 5th & 8th): XLRI students will launch the 3rd round of training/capacity building of SHG members organized by Kalamandir during this week, and will continue beyond the Jamshedpur JoyFest (Contact: Anubhuti Jain, 91-8235674566, sigma [at] xlri.ac.in )
8.       Silent Auction: “Donate Generously, Bid Generously (Oct 6th): XLRI students will collect artifacts from faculty and students, and put them for open auction. The amount raised will go for a selected charity. (Contact: Debroop Sengupta, 91-9955198045, cii_yi [at] xlri.ac.in )
9.       Health Camp (Oct 6th): XLRI students with medical degrees, in partnership with with volunteer medical practitioners, will hold health camps to provide free medical check-ups, and distribute basic medicines in the rural and slum areas. 10.    Kehkaha Day (Oct 7th): The XLRI students will be inviting children from under-privileged background and families of XLRI staff to spend a fun-filled day at the campus.  and have planned various fun activities for them, .
